Why Do Kids' Clothes Fade — and How to Keep Colours Bright

Here's what's actually going on, and the handful of habits that make the biggest difference.

Why colour leaves fabric in the first place

Fading isn't one process. It's three, and they stack.

Dye washing out. Hot water makes cotton fibres swell and open, which lets dye molecules that were never fully bonded escape into the water. Cold water keeps the fibres tighter and the dye where it belongs. This is why the first few washes of a new garment shed the most colour — that's loose surface dye leaving, and it's also why colour-catcher sheets are worth using early on.

Abrasion. Every tumble in the drum rubs fibre against fibre. That mechanical action physically wears away the dyed outer surface of the yarn, which is why knees, cuffs and the shoulders of a much-worn t-shirt go pale before the rest of it. Overloading the machine makes this worse, not better — clothes need water and space to move rather than grind.

Photodegradation. UV light breaks the chemical bonds inside dye molecules. This is genuine, irreversible fading, and it happens whether the garment is being worn outside or hanging on a line in full sun. Line drying is still the greener choice — just do it in shade or indirect light where you can.

Detergent sits behind all three. Aggressive formulas, and especially anything with bleach or a heavy stain-lifting brief, strip colour along with the dirt.

Not all dye is created equal

Some of this is decided long before the garment reaches you, in how the fabric was coloured.

Reactive dyes form an actual covalent bond with the cellulose in cotton. The colour becomes part of the fibre rather than sitting on it, which gives excellent wash fastness — this is the standard approach for good-quality organic cotton, and it's what GOTS-certified dyeing generally uses. Its one real weakness is chlorine: reactive-dyed cotton fades noticeably in chlorinated water, which matters for swim-adjacent clothing and for anyone using chlorine bleach in the wash.

Pigment dyes sit on the surface of the fabric rather than bonding into it. That's deliberate in garment-dyed and "vintage wash" pieces — the soft, lived-in fade is the point. It also means the colour keeps moving for the life of the garment.

The industry measures this with colour fastness testing under the ISO 105 series, scored on a grey scale from 1 to 5, where 5 means no visible change and 1 means severe change. For most European and North American markets, a minimum rating of 4 is expected for wash and rub fastness. You won't see that number on a hang tag, but it's the difference between a jumper that holds its colour for three children and one that doesn't survive one.

The routine that keeps colour in

None of this is complicated. It's mostly about lowering the temperature and reducing friction.

  • Turn everything inside out. The single easiest change. Clothes get just as clean, and the friction lands on the inside of the garment instead of the face of it.
  • Wash cold, on a gentle or delicate cycle. Modern detergents are formulated to work at low temperatures. Save warm washes for genuinely soiled items and illness.
  • Sort by colour, and be strict about it for the first few washes. New deep colours — indigo denim, terracotta, mustard — shed the most loose dye at the start.
  • Use less detergent, not more. Overdosing leaves residue that dulls fabric. Choose a mild, colour-safe formula without bleach or optical brighteners.
  • Don't overload the drum. Crammed washing means more rubbing and worse rinsing.
  • Skip the tumble dryer, or use low heat. Heat and tumbling accelerate both fading and pilling. Air drying is kinder to the fabric and to your electricity bill.
  • Dry out of direct sunlight. Sun bleaches. A shaded balcony or an indoor rack near a window is fine — full midday sun on a dark garment is not.

The vinegar and salt myth

You'll find this advice everywhere: add a cup of vinegar or half a cup of salt to the wash to "set" the colour. It's worth being honest — it doesn't work on already-dyed cotton clothing.

The idea comes from artisanal dyeing, where vinegar genuinely does help fix acid dyes, but only when applied with heat during the dyeing process itself, and only on protein fibres like silk and wool. Cotton isn't dyed with acid dyes. Salt is used during commercial dyeing to help dye take up in the dyebath — it has no fixing effect once the garment is finished.

Where the myth gets its evidence is that a vinegar or salt wash does often seem to help: what's actually happening is that the loose surface dye rinses out in that wash, so the garment bleeds less afterwards. A plain cold wash would have done the same thing.

What genuinely does work against dye transfer is a colour-catcher sheet, which absorbs loose dye floating in the water before it can settle on another garment. Useful when you're washing a new deep colour, or a mixed load you'd rather not sort twice.

When fading is fine

A caveat, because we'd rather not turn laundry into another thing to feel anxious about. Some fading is simply what cotton does as it ages, and on a garment designed to be handed down it can read as character rather than damage. Softly faded indigo, a slightly gentler terracotta — these are the marks of a piece that's been worn properly.

The fading worth preventing is the fast, patchy, grey kind that arrives within months and makes a garment look tired before it's outgrown. That's usually a laundry problem, and it's fixable. Even fading across three years of wear is not a problem at all.

It's also worth checking a garment's actual condition before you retire it. Colour that's dulled but even, with sound seams and no thin patches, has plenty of life left — for a younger sibling, or for a second life with another family.

Can you restore colour to faded kids' clothes?

Not really — where the dye has washed out or been broken down by UV, it's gone. What you can sometimes fix is dulling caused by detergent residue or hard-water build-up, which responds to a wash with less detergent or an extra rinse. For a genuinely faded garment, over-dyeing at home with a fibre-appropriate dye is the only route to restored colour, and results on mixed-fibre or already-uneven fabric are unpredictable.

Why did one white item come out pink?

Loose dye from another garment transferred in the water — usually from something new or deeply coloured. Rewash the affected item on its own immediately, before it dries, since heat helps set the transferred dye. Next time, sort by colour or add a colour-catcher sheet.

Does organic cotton fade faster than conventional cotton?

The fibre itself is the same; what matters is how it was dyed and finished.
