Why Do Kids' Clothes Shrink — and Can You Unshrink Them?

Quick answer

Cotton shrinks because the yarn was held under tension at the mill, and the first encounter with heat and moisture lets it relax back. Most of that happens in the first few washes, and the tumble dryer does more of the damage than the wash itself. You can often recover a centimetre or two with a lukewarm conditioner soak and careful reshaping — but prevention (cool wash, air dry, and a little room in the fit) works far better than rescue.

You buy a jumper in size 104. It fits. Six weeks later the sleeves stop short of the wrist and the hem sits above the belly button, and your child hasn't grown anywhere near that much. The jumper shrank.

It's one of the most common quiet frustrations of dressing small people — and it isn't really a quality problem, or at least not only that. Shrinkage is a physical property of cotton, and once you understand what's happening in the drum you can control most of it.

What "shrinking" actually is

The fabric isn't getting smaller in any real sense. The fibres are going back to where they wanted to be all along.

During spinning, weaving and finishing, yarn is pulled taut and held under tension — that's how you keep a fabric flat and even as it runs through a mill at speed. The tension is locked in by the finishing process, not removed by it. Then water and heat arrive in your machine, the fibres swell, the yarn crimps back, and the whole cloth contracts. Textile people call this relaxation shrinkage, and it accounts for most of what you see after the first wash.

This is also why the effect is front-loaded. A garment that has shrunk once has released most of the stored tension; it will keep creeping a little with each hot cycle, but nothing like the first drop.

Pre-shrunk, sanforized, and what those words are worth

Untreated, loom-state cotton can lose a startling amount of length on its first wash — figures around 8–10% get quoted across the trade. Which is why almost nothing reaches you untreated.

The standard fix is sanforization, a compressive pre-shrinking process patented in 1930 by Sanford Lockwood Cluett. The cloth is dampened, then fed between a rubber belt and a heated cylinder so it is deliberately compressed and shortened before anyone cuts a pattern from it. Done well, it leaves only a small residual shrinkage — the trade generally aims for a low single-digit percentage after home washing.

Two honest caveats. "Pre-shrunk" is not a regulated promise, and the amount left in the cloth varies a lot by mill. And pre-shrinking treats the fabric, not the garment: seams, ribbing and elastic can still move.

Why the t-shirt got shorter but not narrower

Knitted cotton — the jersey in almost every t-shirt, legging and sweatshirt your child owns — is built from interlocking loops. Loops have somewhere to go. Woven cotton, like the denim in a pair of trousers, is a tight grid, and grids move less.

The practical result is that knits tend to shrink more, and mostly in length, because the loops compress vertically as they relax. That is exactly the "shorter but not tighter" t-shirt every parent recognises. Wovens shrink less and more evenly across both directions.

If you take one thing from this: the dryer, not the wash, is where most kids' clothes lose their size. Heat, tumbling and friction arrive together, and each cycle takes a little more.

Can you unshrink it? Sort of

There is a genuinely useful trick, and it's worth knowing before anything goes in the hand-me-down bag.

  1. Fill a basin with lukewarm water and stir in a tablespoon of hair conditioner or baby shampoo.
  2. Submerge the garment and leave it around 30 minutes — no longer, and never overnight.
  3. Rinse gently. Do not wring or twist: press the water out against the side of the basin, or roll the piece in a dry towel.
  4. Lay it flat and stretch it a little at a time — length first, then width — easing it back towards the shape you want.
  5. Reshape once more halfway through drying, and let it air dry completely.

The conditioner works by coating and lubricating the fibres so they slide past each other instead of gripping, which is why it's the same idea as detangling hair. It works best on cotton and cotton blends, less reliably on wool, and not at all on anything that has already felted.

Be realistic about the result. You are usually recovering part of what was lost, not all of it — enough to buy another season out of a shirt, rarely enough to reverse a garment that went through several hot dryer cycles.

Every strategy above is damage control. The other approach is to stop treating exact fit as the goal.

A garment cut with deliberate room absorbs a couple of percent of shrinkage without anyone noticing, and it stays wearable across a growth spurt rather than a season. That's most of the reason our pieces are cut oversized — a hem that starts long stays long, and an oversized denim pant that has already been washed a few times is about as dimensionally settled as clothing gets. It's the same logic that makes a piece worth handing to the next child instead of the recycling bin.

FAQ

Does organic cotton shrink more than conventional cotton?

No — shrinkage is driven by fibre structure and how the fabric was finished, not by how the cotton was farmed. An organic jersey and a conventional jersey knitted and pre-shrunk the same way behave the same way in the wash.

How many washes until a garment stops shrinking?

Most of the movement happens in the first one to three washes, when the relaxation shrinkage is released. After that a garment usually stabilises, though repeated hot drying can keep nudging it smaller.

Is it the washing machine or the dryer that shrinks clothes?

Both, but the dryer does more. Washing swells the fibres in water, which partly offsets the contraction; drying combines heat, evaporation and mechanical tumbling with nothing to offset it.

Does "pre-shrunk" mean it won't shrink at all?

No. Pre-shrinking removes most of the stored tension but leaves a residual amount in the cloth, and the term isn't tightly regulated. Expect a small amount of movement even on a pre-shrunk garment, and treat any first wash as cool and gentle.

Should I size up to allow for shrinkage?

Buying a full size up to compensate usually ends with a garment that's too big for a season and then briefly right. A piece already cut with room built in is a better answer — you get the allowance without the awkward months.

Can a shrunk garment still be handed down?

Very often, yes — it simply becomes the next size down for a younger child. Note the actual measurements rather than the label size when you pack it away, so nobody unpacks a "size 110" that fits like a 104.
